How the shutdown may affect your exemption application

You may have noticed the government is in a partial shutdown (if not, surprise)!

This means that the IRS is not currently processing any applications for recognition of tax exempt status (for example, if your organization is seeking recognition as a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), 501(c)(6), etc.). Even before the shutdown began, we were already facing increasing delays in processing time for applications (6-9 months has been the average I have seen).

The shutdown has now added at least a month onto that average — if not more (there are a host of other factors other than just the shutdown that are increasing delays). If your organization has been working on an application for (or reinstatement of) tax exempt status with the IRS, you may want to work quickly to finalize and submit your application so that you can get your spot in the constantly growing queue.
